Surat Residents Oppose PMAY Flat Allotment to Nasir Nagar Families, Submit Petition

Residents of the Suman Maitri Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing complex in Surat's Jahangirpura have submitted a petition to the Surat Collector and the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), opposing the proposed allotment of flats to families displaced from the Nasir Nagar slum.

The residents have urged the authorities to review the proposal, stating that the interests, security and social harmony of the existing residents should be taken into consideration before any allotment is made.

Residents Raise Concerns Over Proposed Rehabilitation

In their petition, residents said they were grateful to the Central Government and the SMC for providing housing under the PMAY scheme. However, they expressed concern after learning that flats in the Suman Maitri housing complex were proposed to be allotted to people affected by the Nasir Nagar slum clearance.

According to the petition, the housing complex currently has residents from different communities and religions living together in a harmonious environment.

The petition claims that a significant increase in the number of residents from a single community could disturb the existing social balance and peaceful atmosphere within the housing complex.

Petition Seeks Priority for Existing Residents' Interests

The residents have requested the Collector and the municipal administration to consider the security, convenience and welfare of the existing occupants, as well as the original objective of the housing scheme, before proceeding with the proposed rehabilitation.

The petition specifically demands that flats at the Suman Maitri PMAY housing project should not be allotted to families displaced from Nasir Nagar and calls on the authorities to reconsider the proposed allotment process.
