Surat Multi-Modal Transport Hub Phase 1 Reaches 51% Completion, Target Set For December 2027

Construction of the Surat Multi-Modal Transportation Hub (MMTH), a major project aimed at bringing railway and multiple public transport services under one integrated facility, has reached 51% completion in Phase 1 and 42% in Phase 2, with the entire project targeted for completion by December 2027.

The project is being developed by the Surat Integrated Transportation Development Corporation Limited (SITCO), a joint venture between the Ministry of Railways and the Government of Gujarat.

Railway, ST, Metro And Bus Services Under One Roof

Spread across 2.5 lakh square metres, the MMTH will integrate Surat Railway Station with the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation's (GSRTC) Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Surat Municipal Corporation's city bus service, the BRTS corridor and future metro connectivity.

The hub will have six entry and exit gates. A 5-km elevated road corridor is also being constructed to provide direct connectivity for passengers and public transport vehicles arriving from different parts of the city.

Phase 1 Includes Station Buildings And Concourse

A contract worth ₹877.78 crore was awarded for Phase 1, with work beginning in December 2022.

The phase includes the East and West side station buildings, GSRTC ISBT, concourse, through-roof, skywalk, GSRTC workshop, bus parking and external development works.

Overall, 51% of Phase 1 has been completed.

Construction of the GSRTC ISBT building is 90% complete. The 33,188-square-metre building will have a ground floor and one additional floor, with provisions for additional floors for future commercial use.

The East side station building is 45% complete, while the design and structural drawings for the West side station building have been approved.

Concourse And Platform Connectivity Work Underway

Work on the 12,325-square-metre concourse is 43% complete.

Structural work connecting Platform 4 with Platforms 2 and 3 has been completed, while 41 girders have been launched. Work on staircases, escalators and the roof is currently underway.

The connection between Platform 2 and Platform 1 will be taken up after the Diwali rush.

Around 45% of the through-roof work has been completed, while the GSRTC workshop is 75% complete.

5-Km Elevated Road Under Phase 2

Phase 2 of the project involves construction of a 5-km elevated road corridor. Work on the phase began in August 2024 and has a contract value of ₹372.91 crore.

Around 42% of Phase 2 work has been completed.

On the 4.8-km stretch outside the railway area, 605 of 795 piles, 110 of 160 pile caps and 90 of 174 piers have been completed. In addition, 183 of 364 girders have been cast, while 54 girders have been erected.

MMTH To Handle Over 6.25 Lakh Passengers Daily

Once completed, the MMTH will have the capacity to handle more than 6.25 lakh passengers a day.

The facility is planned to enable seamless transfers between railway services, ST buses, Metro, BRTS and city bus services.

The project will include a modern station building, facilities for differently-abled passengers and smart-station systems, along with 40 lifts and 70 escalators.

Commercial Spaces Planned

The MMTH will also include provisions for commercial development, with space earmarked for retail outlets, offices and hospitality facilities within the station building, concourse and elevated corridors.

Additional areas have been reserved for future commercial development in the East and West station buildings and the GSRTC ISBT.
