Surat Braces for Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds; SMC Orders Preventive Measures

Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has gone on high alert following forecasts of heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds on July 30 and 31. Having witnessed widespread waterlogging and damage during recent spells of rain, the civic body has initiated precautionary measures ahead of the expected weather to minimise risks to life and property.

At a high-level review meeting held at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) under the chairmanship of the Municipal Commissioner, officials from all departments were directed to remain on 24-hour alert and take immediate action at vulnerable locations.

Open venues to remain shut

As a precaution, SMC has ordered the closure of temporary structures, open game zones, marriage halls and party plots to the public from Thursday afternoon for the next two days. Officials have also been instructed to ensure strict compliance with safety norms and standard operating procedures (SOPs) at construction sites.

Evacuation plan for low-lying areas

The civic body has directed officials to inspect dilapidated and unsafe buildings across all zones, as they could pose a risk during heavy rain. Residents of hazardous structures may be shifted to safer locations if required.

Authorities have also been asked to closely monitor low-lying areas vulnerable to flooding and be prepared to evacuate residents. Arrangements for temporary shelters, drinking water, food and medical assistance will be kept ready if the situation demands.

Removal of risky hoardings and structures

With strong winds expected, officials have been instructed to remove dangerous hoardings and signboards across the city, including those along the BRTS corridor. High-mast lighting towers will also be inspected, and any structure found unsafe will be dismantled or lowered as a precaution.

Tree trimming and debris clearance

The Garden Department has been directed to trim weak and overhanging tree branches that could fall during strong winds and block roads. Garden waste is to be cleared immediately, while loose tin sheets, weak sheds and other temporary hazardous structures are also to be removed.

Fishermen advised to stay off the sea

Authorities have directed officials to issue timely warnings to fishermen, advising them not to venture into the sea during the adverse weather. Those already at sea will be asked to return, while precautionary measures will also be implemented in coastal areas based on prevailing weather conditions.

Round-the-clock monitoring at ICCC

To strengthen emergency response, nodal officers from all departments have been instructed to remain present at the ICCC from 2 pm onwards. Over the next two days, officials will continuously monitor rainfall, waterlogging, fallen trees, power supply disruptions, unsafe buildings and hoardings through the command centre, with emergency teams ready for immediate deployment if required.
