Surat BJP Feud Escalates As Assault Claims, Demolition Allegations Deepen Internal Crisis

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s internal rift in Surat has spilled into the open after a confrontation at the office of North Surat MLA Kanti Bal triggered conflicting claims of a scuffle, physical assault and fractures. The dispute, involving Town Planning (TP) Committee chairman Mahendra Desai and Manhar Vora, the husband of BJP corporator Jayshree Vora, has now raised questions over party discipline, the handling of the alleged incident and allegations of selective action against property owners.

The controversy has intensified at a time when the city BJP president is reportedly abroad, leaving speculation over who will step in to address the growing discord within the party.

Clash at MLA’s office sparks conflicting versions

The incident is said to have taken place during a meeting at the office of MLA Kanti Bal on Monday. According to sources, a heated argument broke out between Mahendra Desai and Manhar Vora before the situation allegedly escalated into a scuffle.

However, both sides have presented sharply different versions of events.

Jayshree Vora and her husband have alleged that they were physically assaulted and suffered injuries that required medical treatment. Desai has denied the allegations, maintaining that the incident involved only a verbal exchange and a scuffle. The MLA is also reported to have described the episode as a scuffle rather than an assault.

People said to have been present during the meeting have also claimed that Manhar Vora had an altercation with another corporator, during which allegations of slapping surfaced, adding further confusion over what exactly transpired.

Questions over medical treatment

The handling of the alleged injuries has become another point of debate.

Questions are being raised over why treatment was reportedly sought at a private hospital instead of a civil hospital, where medico-legal procedures are typically followed in assault cases. Conflicting claims have also emerged over whether fractures were sustained during the incident.

The differing accounts have prompted calls for the party leadership to establish the facts and determine responsibility.

Demolition drive allegations add political heat

The dispute has also expanded beyond the alleged confrontation.

Manhar Vora has levelled serious allegations against TP Committee chairman Mahendra Desai, claiming that demolition action was being selectively carried out against industrialists and property owners from the Saurashtra and Patidar communities in the Varachha and Katargam areas.

According to the allegations, complaints were being filed and action initiated against constructions belonging to people who had supported the BJP during municipal elections. The claims have added a political dimension to the controversy and intensified tensions within the party.

The public exchange of allegations between BJP leaders has drawn attention to the party’s internal functioning in Surat. With the city BJP president currently overseas, attention is now focused on how the party leadership will respond and whether an internal inquiry will be initiated to determine what happened during the meeting and address the allegations surrounding both the confrontation and the demolition drive.
