Sinkhole opens up on newly built Vesu Canal Road in Surat, raises fresh concerns over road quality

A sinkhole suddenly appeared on the Canal Road in Surat’s Vesu area on Tuesday, triggering concern among motorists and raising fresh questions over the quality of recently constructed roads in the city. The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) rushed to the spot, barricaded the affected stretch and began repair work to prevent any accidents.

The incident comes amid a series of similar road cave-ins reported across Surat during the ongoing monsoon season, prompting residents to question the quality of construction and monitoring of civic infrastructure projects.

Newly built road develops sinkhole

According to local residents, the affected road had been constructed only recently. The appearance of a sinkhole on a newly built stretch has sparked concerns over construction standards and the durability of the road.

Residents said similar incidents have occurred in different parts of Surat in recent months, but adequate preventive measures have not been taken to address the issue.

SMC begins repair work

After receiving information about the incident, officials from the Surat Municipal Corporation reached the site and cordoned off the affected area.

Traffic movement was regulated while repair work was carried out to fill the sinkhole and restore the damaged section of the road.

However, residents questioned whether simply filling the cavity would offer a long-term solution, urging authorities to identify and address the root cause of the problem.

Residents seek accountability

The repeated incidents of roads caving in have once again put the spotlight on the municipal corporation’s quality control and supervision of road construction projects.

Residents said strict inspections during construction and better monitoring could have prevented such incidents. They also demanded accountability from officials and contractors if negligence is found.

With sinkhole incidents becoming more frequent during the monsoon, locals have urged the municipal corporation to conduct technical inspections of newly constructed roads across the city.

They have also called for immediate strengthening of vulnerable stretches to prevent further cave-ins and ensure the safety of commuters.
