Major Fire Breaks Out at Surat Textile Market, 20–22 Fire Tenders Deployed

A major fire broke out at the Shyam Sangini Textile Market in Surat’s Saroli area early Wednesday, prompting the deployment of around 20–22 fire brigade vehicles as firefighters worked to control the flames and dense smoke, officials said.

Fire Reported Around 12:52 am

The Surat fire control room received the first emergency call at around 12:52 a.m., following which fire tenders were dispatched from three nearby fire stations.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found the fourth and fifth floors of the textile market engulfed in flames. Thick smoke had severely reduced visibility inside the building, making it difficult for personnel to access the affected areas.

Major Fire Call Declared

Given the intensity of the blaze, officials declared a major fire call and mobilised additional fire tenders from other parts of Surat.

Surat Municipal Corporation Chief Fire Officer Basant Parikh said around 20–22 fire tenders had been deployed to tackle the fire.

Firefighters Operate at Height of Around 20 Metres

Parikh said the market has double-height floors, meaning the fourth and fifth floors are located considerably higher than conventional floor levels.

As a result, firefighters are carrying out operations at a height of around 20 metres. Turntable ladders and hydraulic platforms are being used to reach the affected floors.

Power Supply Shut Off

The electricity supply to the building has been disconnected as a precaution to reduce the risk of electrical hazards during the firefighting operation.

Meanwhile, heavy smoke inside the market has reduced visibility to almost zero, creating additional difficulties for firefighters working inside the premises.

Breathing Apparatus Used Inside Market

Firefighters are using breathing apparatus sets to enter the smoke-filled building and reach the affected floors.

Teams are continuing firefighting and containment efforts to prevent the blaze from spreading to other sections of the market or nearby buildings.

No Casualties Reported

Officials said there were no reports of anyone being trapped inside the building, and no casualties have been reported so far.

Firefighting and containment operations remain underway as teams continue efforts to bring the blaze under control.
