Udhna Creek Cleaned, But Garbage Dumped near SMC Office, Schools

Fresh questions have been raised over waste management in Surat after a large quantity of garbage and sludge removed during the cleaning of a creek in the Udhna area was allegedly dumped in an open plot near the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) office and two schools.

The development comes even as Surat continues to be recognised for its cleanliness initiatives, with recent concerns also emerging over road cave-ins reported in different parts of the city.

Waste Allegedly Not Sent to Disposal Site

According to information available, the SMC recently carried out a cleaning drive at the Udhna creek.

However, instead of transporting the waste and sludge to the Khajod Disposal Site, where such material is meant to be disposed of, it was allegedly dumped on a nearby open plot.

The incident has raised questions over why the waste was not taken to the designated disposal facility.

Rain Spreads Mud Onto Roads

Recent rainfall has worsened the situation, with mud and waste from the open plot reportedly flowing onto the adjoining road.

As a result, the stretch has become dirty and foul-smelling, while the sludge spread across the road has increased the risk of vehicles skidding, raising safety concerns for commuters.

Dump Site Near Civic Office and Schools

The garbage dump is located close to the Surat Municipal Corporation’s office, drawing criticism over its proximity to the civic body’s own premises.

The area is also home to two schools, where students have to pass through the affected stretch every day.

Residents Voice Health Concerns

Local residents have expressed concern over the growing mosquito population around the dump site, fearing it could increase the risk of disease outbreaks.

They have also raised objections to children being exposed to the foul smell and unhygienic conditions while travelling to and from school.

Civic Body Under Scrutiny

The incident has sparked questions over the city’s waste disposal practices and whether prompt action will be taken to clear the garbage from the site.

Residents are now awaiting a response from the Surat Municipal Corporation and measures to address the sanitation and public health concerns in the area.
