Four Senior Doctors Get Police Notices In Surat Medical College Ragging Case

The Khatodara police have issued notices to four senior resident doctors in connection with the alleged ragging of postgraduate junior doctors at the government medical college located on the New Civil Hospital campus in Surat.

The development comes in the case involving the death by suicide of 29-year-old Dr Harsh Subhashchandra Pandya, a first-year postgraduate resident in the Microbiology Department. Police have registered a case against four second-year resident doctors, including three women, over allegations of ragging and mental harassment.

Four Senior Residents Named

The accused have been identified as Dr Nirali Paresh Vasave, Dr Anuj Maheshwari, Dr Dikshita Sandeep Ghevariya and Dr Hina Valjibhai Bhut.

Police have directed the four senior residents to appear before the investigating team in connection with the case.

According to the complaint, postgraduate residents from the first, second and third years are taught and trained by postgraduate faculty members. Senior resident doctors are not authorised to assign work to junior residents.

Nine Junior Doctors Allegedly Targeted

Despite this, the four accused senior residents allegedly targeted Dr Harsh and eight other first-year resident doctors, allegedly using insulting language and threatening to complain to faculty members that they were not performing their duties.

Police said that on August 5, the accused allegedly sent messages through WhatsApp asking Dr Harsh and other first-year residents to report to the Serology Laboratory of the Microbiology Department.

The junior doctors were allegedly kept inside the laboratory for around two hours, during which they were allegedly subjected to insulting remarks and mental harassment.

The case is being investigated by Khatodara police, with the notices issued to the four senior residents as part of the ongoing probe.
