A case resembling a suspense thriller has emerged after a woman whom Jharkhand's Ranchi police believed had been murdered was found alive in Surat.
The woman, a mother of two, was located in the Sachin GIDC area with the help of Sachin GIDC police and handed over to the Khelari police team from Jharkhand. Legal proceedings have been initiated.
Father had filed murder complaint against son-in-law and his brother
According to details, Chhathu Gop Girdhari Gop (65), a resident of Tandwa, Chatra, filed a complaint at Khelari police station in Ranchi on August 30, alleging that his daughter, Vinidevi alias Veena Devi Samu Mahanto (36), had been murdered on August 24 and her body disposed of.
The complaint named her husband, Samu Bandhu Mahanto, his younger brother Aniket Mahanto and other members of the in-laws' family. Police registered a murder case but were unable to locate Vinidevi's body, leaving investigators puzzled.
During the search, police discovered that Vinidevi's mobile phone was still active and that its location was traced to Surat. A team from Khelari police subsequently arrived in Surat and, with assistance from Sachin GIDC police, traced the woman to Raju Bhai's chawl in Shivanjali Society, located in the Sachin GIDC area.
The woman was then handed over to the Jharkhand police team.
Woman reportedly fled to Surat to escape dowry harassment
Vinidevi, who has a son and a daughter, married Samu Mahanto in 2010. According to the complaint, despite dowry being provided at the time of marriage, her husband and his family allegedly continued to demand additional dowry and subjected her to physical and mental harassment.
She reportedly left her marital home and travelled to Surat to escape the alleged harassment.
