The complaint named her husband, Samu Bandhu Mahanto, his younger brother Aniket Mahanto and other members of the in-laws' family. Police registered a murder case but were unable to locate Vinidevi's body, leaving investigators puzzled.
During the search, police discovered that Vinidevi's mobile phone was still active and that its location was traced to Surat. A team from Khelari police subsequently arrived in Surat and, with assistance from Sachin GIDC police, traced the woman to Raju Bhai's chawl in Shivanjali Society, located in the Sachin GIDC area.
