Bhestan School Liquor Party Exposes Security Lapses; Four Arrested

A liquor party inside a classroom of a municipal school in Bhestan has exposed serious lapses in the school’s security arrangements, with all four persons involved in the incident arrested. The incident has raised questions over how outsiders were allowed to enter the school premises and how classrooms and other parts of the campus were being monitored.

At schools No. 77 and 248, run by the Municipal Primary Education Committee in the Siddharthnagar area of Bhestan, a video went viral on social media allegedly showing a security guard on duty at the schools enjoying a liquor party with his associates inside a classroom.

Several people were seen sitting and openly consuming liquor in the same classroom where children attend classes, triggering strong outrage among parents and local residents.

The incident has raised questions over who is allowed to enter the school premises when the school is closed or on holidays, who is responsible for classroom keys and other security arrangements, and how the presence and functioning of security guards are monitored.

Security agency issued notice

Following the incident, the Education Committee took action against the security arrangements. A notice was issued to Shakti Protection, the agency responsible for security at the school, seeking an explanation regarding its responsibility in the incident.

The arrest of all four persons involved has added a serious dimension to the matter. However, questions remain over whether action against those directly involved will be enough to address the larger security lapses at the school.

Questions over repeated security lapses

The most serious concern is that lapses in school security arrangements have reportedly surfaced in the past as well. Yet, on previous occasions, matters were allegedly dealt with through notices, penalties or limited action against the concerned employees, without bringing about the necessary improvement in the overall security system.

The repeated incidents have raised questions over the functioning of the security agency, including the selection and verification of guards, supervision of their duties and monitoring of their activities on school premises.

Accountability under scrutiny

The role of Shakti Protection and the system through which security personnel are appointed and supervised will now come under scrutiny. Authorities will also need to examine how the four persons gained access to the classroom and whether established security protocols were followed.

A lenient approach towards repeated lapses in school security could weaken accountability and make it harder to prevent similar incidents in the future. With children using the premises, there can be little room for negligence in security arrangements.

At present, all four persons involved in the liquor party have been arrested, while Shakti Protection has been issued a notice. The key question now is whether the authorities will take further steps to fix accountability for the security lapses or whether the matter will remain limited to arrests and a notice to the agency.
