A surprise raid by the Ahmedabad Jail DIG squad at Surat’s Lajpore Jail led to the recovery of 11 mobile phones and nine SIM cards, with some devices found hidden inside toilets and under washbasins while two phones were allegedly being charged inside a barrack.
The search was conducted on Friday night between 9:30 pm and 10:40 pm by a team led by Jailor Devshibhai Rashmalbhai Karangiya, along with prison staff.
Phones Found Hidden In Multiple Barracks
During the search of Barrack No. 1 in Yard No. C-8, the squad found three mobile phones wrapped in a transparent plastic bag and hidden under a bucket inside the bathroom.
Two more phones were found kept on charging outside the washbasin in the same barrack. Both were unclaimed.
The team also searched under-trial prisoner Ramakant alias Golu Gehrai Das and allegedly recovered a mobile phone from the right pocket of his trousers.
More Phones Recovered From Toilets And Washbasins
The search continued across other barracks, with several more devices being found at concealed locations.
Two mobile phones were recovered from the lower portion of a washbasin in the water area of Barrack No. 1 in Yard No. C-3. Another unclaimed phone was found behind a toilet.
In Yard No. C-11, the squad recovered one phone hidden under a plastic tub near the wall behind the barrack door. Another unclaimed phone was found near the door of the same barrack.
11 Phones And 9 SIM Cards Seized
In total, the Ahmedabad Jail DIG squad seized 11 mobile phones valued at around ₹11,500 and nine SIM cards during the operation.
Most of the recovered devices were reportedly Keyoda mobile phones, which are commonly used inside jails because of their compact design, simple operation and ease of concealment.
The raid comes amid repeated police investigations into alleged criminal activities being planned or coordinated from inside Lajpore Jail, including suspected murder plots. The recovery of multiple phones and SIM cards has once again raised questions over the security and monitoring of mobile phone use inside the high-security prison.
