Will Sanju Samson miss T20 World Cup semifinal after helmet-throw celebration?

India sealed their place in the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026 with a crucial victory over West Indies in the final Super 8 match played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. While Team India’s win sparked celebrations, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson found himself at the centre of debate following his on-field celebration.
Samson played a sensational unbeaten knock of 97 off just 50 balls, smashing 12 fours and four sixes to guide India to victory. However, after hitting the winning shot, the Indian batter celebrated by throwing his helmet onto the ground — an act that has triggered questions over whether he could face disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The incident has led to speculation over whether Samson’s celebration could prove costly ahead of the all-important semifinal clash. According to ICC’s Code of Conduct, throwing equipment such as a helmet or bat on the field is considered misconduct, as it may pose a safety risk to players, umpires and others present on the ground.
Under ICC regulations, such behaviour can invite sanctions ranging from fines and demerit points to, in serious cases, suspension. The ICC maintains a strict stance on player conduct, particularly when actions could potentially endanger safety during play.
India are set to face England in the second semifinal of the tournament on March 5. The high-stakes encounter will be played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The clash will also revive memories of the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal, where England had defeated India.
With the semifinal approaching, all eyes will now be on whether the ICC takes any disciplinary action against Samson, and if the celebration has any bearing on his availability for the knockout match.
