Vinesh Phogat returns to Haryana after WFI ban stops tournament participation
Indian wrestler and Congress MLA Vinesh Phogat returned to Haryana on Tuesday morning without taking part in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) Senior Open Ranking Tournament 2026 in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh.
Phogat had reached Gonda on Monday for verification before her matches scheduled for Tuesday. However, the Wrestling Federation of India did not allow her to compete because of a ban linked to an anti doping show cause notice issued against her .
When Phogat reached the WFI training centre around 4 pm on Monday, she found the centre closed. Several journalists were also present at the spot. She reportedly tried to call WFI president Sanjay Singh, but allegedly his phone line was busy.
After leaving the training centre, Phogat travelled to Ayodhya and later returned to Haryana on Tuesday morning. As per reports, the Wrestling Federation of India has continued to stand by its decision and has not removed the ban on the wrestler.
According to WFI officials, the federation had already informed Phogat about the show cause notice related to anti doping procedures. The officials said she would not be allowed to participate in official tournaments until the matter is resolved.
The Senior Open Ranking Tournament is considered important for wrestlers because performances in the event help in national selection and future competitions . Many wrestlers from different states are taking part in the tournament being held in Gonda.
Phogat has been one of India’s top women wrestlers and has represented the country in international events, including the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. She has also been active in politics after joining the Congress party.
