Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks 57-Year-Old Record, Becomes Youngest To Score Duleep Trophy Fifty

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued his remarkable rise in Indian domestic cricket on Sunday, smashing a quick half-century for East Zone against Central Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2026 semi-final in Bengaluru. The 15-year-old reached his fifty in just 42 deliveries, breaking a 57-year-old record in the process.

Sooryavanshi Becomes Youngest To Hit Duleep Trophy Fifty

Sooryavanshi brought up his half-century with a six and, at 15 years and 175 days, became the youngest batter in Duleep Trophy history to score a fifty.

He surpassed the previous record held by the late Laxman Singh, who was 16 years and 23 days old when he achieved the feat in 1969.

Teenager Also Takes Charge Of East Zone

Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking fifty came after he was handed the captaincy earlier in the match when regular skipper Ishan Kishan was forced off the field after being struck on his right wrist while keeping.

Sooryavanshi, who had been named East Zone’s vice-captain for the tournament, became the youngest player to captain a senior First-Class side after Kishan left the field. He led an experienced East Zone team featuring players such as Mohammed Shami, Mukesh Kumar and Abhimanyu Easwaran.

The teenager was in charge for nearly an hour and even successfully used a DRS review during his spell as captain.

Sooryavanshi Made An Impact With The Ball Too

The 15-year-old had also contributed with his left-arm spin in East Zone’s quarter-final against North East Zone. He bowled three overs and picked up two wickets while conceding just 11 runs.

Speaking in a video shared by the BCCI, Sooryavanshi said he enjoys both batting and bowling.

“The wicket wasn’t falling and I was asked to bowl 2-3 overs,” he said, adding that Kishan had taken a risk by asking him to bowl because he did not know that he was a “wicket-taker”.

Sooryavanshi dismissed Kishan Lyngdoh and Imliwati Lemtur in the same over to make an immediate impact.

The Duleep Trophy semi-final marks only his second appearance in the tournament and his 10th First-Class match, adding another landmark to the teenager’s rapidly developing career.
