With barely three weeks remaining before the start of the T20 World Cup 2026, uncertainty continues to surround the tournament’s venues, especially concerning Bangladesh’s matches. The ongoing disagreement between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has led to confusion, tension, and growing diplomatic and logistical challenges for the global event.

BCB raises objections to matches in India

Earlier, the BCB had expressed serious reservations about playing their group-stage matches in India. Citing security issues and the current political climate between the two countries, the BCB formally requested the ICC to shift Bangladesh’s matches to Sri Lanka.

However, the ICC rejected this proposal, stating that such last-minute changes would disrupt broadcasting schedules, ticket sales, stadium operations, and travel plans for teams and officials.

Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram emerge as backup options

As per media reports, the ICC has not seriously considered Sri Lanka as an alternative venue. Instead, discussions are underway with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to identify backup locations within India itself. Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram have reportedly been shortlisted as contingency venues.

Both the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) have been asked to remain prepared. Officials from TNCA have assured the ICC that Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium, which has already hosted seven World Cup games, can accommodate more matches due to the availability of multiple pitches.

Mustafizur Rahman's issue adds fuel to the fire

Tensions escalated further after the BCCI advised IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman. This decision hardened the BCB’s position and pushed the matter beyond security concerns. In response, Bangladesh banned the broadcast of the Indian Premier League — a move taken for the first time since 2008.

Decision Expected Soon

With the tournament fast approaching, the ICC is keen to bring an indicated resolution to the issue. Reports citing sources  suggest that clarity on the venue situation could emerge within the next 48 hours. Notably, Mustafizur Rahman’s release from KKR was earlier confirmed following the Indian board’s recommendation.

Bangladesh’s Schedule Remains Unchanged—for Now

At present, Bangladesh is scheduled to begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the West Indies on February 7 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. They will then face Italy at the same venue on February 9. Given their familiarity with subcontinental conditions, Bangladesh is expected to pose a strong challenge in the tournament.
