India’s senior men’s national team head coach, Manolo Marquez, announced his 26-member squad for the March FIFA International Window, which includes legendary striker Sunil Chhetri.

Chhetri, the fourth-highest international goalscorer of all time with 94 goals, had previously announced his retirement from international football in June 2024.

The decision was made after a long and illustrious career, as Chhetri felt it was time to give way to younger talents, allowing fresh legs to take over the team’s leadership. His retirement was seen as a significant shift in Indian football, as he had been a crucial part of the squad for over 16 years.

However, due to the importance of the upcoming tournaments, particularly the AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers, Chhetri has now made a return to the national team. Coach Marquez emphasized the need for Chhetri’s experience, stating, The qualification for the Asian Cup is very crucial for the team.

Given the importance of the tournament and the matches ahead, he discussed with Sunil Chhetri about making a comeback to strengthen the National Team. He agreed, and so we have included him in the squad.

India will first play against the Maldives in an international friendly on March 19, and then face Bangladesh on March 25 in their first AFC Asian Cup 2027 Qualifiers match.
