Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed Delhi Capitals head coach ahead of IPL 2027, taking up his first formal coaching role with the franchise.
Ganguly Begins New Coaching Chapter
Ganguly has been associated with Delhi Capitals since 2019, when he joined the franchise as an advisor. He later served as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams.
The 54-year-old will now move into the dugout as Delhi Capitals look to build on their recent performances and mount a stronger challenge for their maiden IPL title.
Delhi Capitals announced Ganguly’s appointment through a video on social media, captioned: “Dilli, it’s time for Dadagiri Sourav Ganguly, Head Coach of the Tigers.”
Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s appointment, describing him as an integral part of the franchise.
“I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals,” Jindal said.
He added that Ganguly’s leadership would help the franchise prepare for another title challenge.
Ganguly Familiar With Capitals Setup
Ganguly said his long association with the owners, management, support staff and players made the new responsibility special.
“Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years,” Ganguly said.
Ganguly said the team had a talented group of players and had played a good brand of cricket recently, adding that he was looking forward to working with the squad in the new season and building a strong and fearless team.
Delhi Capitals Still Await IPL Title
Ganguly’s appointment adds another chapter to his seven-year association with the franchise. He has worked across both the men’s and women’s teams and has been involved in developing the Capitals’ cricketing structure.
Delhi Capitals reached their maiden IPL final in 2020 but are yet to win the tournament.
The franchise’s women’s team has also reached the WPL final in all four editions, finishing runners-up on each occasion.
