Amid the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) across industries worldwide, Pakistan’s cricketing body has also adopted a unique approach to selecting its squad using the technology.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, addressing a presser in light of their recent blemishing loss against Bangladesh, said that the board’s selection committee has chosen the roster of 150 players from the country’s domestic circuit with the help of AI.

Speaking to the media, he explained that 80% of the selection was carried out using AI technology. Meanwhile, the remaining 20% was done by human experts tasked with the job.

Naqvi further added that this integration warrants a transparent and fair player selection, providing records and pushing a case for those who “deserve a place in the team”.

The selection was carried out for the upcoming Champions Cup, slated to start on September 12.

Naqvi also addressed the criticism the side has been subjected to and replied that they were told to “slit the throats of four to five players, get rid of them; you can’t dump someone unless you have a better replacement”.
