Mohammed Shami creates IPL history with record first-ball wicket against DC

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami marked his return to the cricket with a brilliant spell in Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)’s campaign opener in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) played at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday.
Despite returning figures of 1-28, Shami made a decisive impact during the powerplay, setting the tone for his side with early control and tactical precision.
The experienced seamer struck on the very first ball of the run chase, dismissing KL Rahul with a well-planned delivery.
With that, Shami scripted history in the IPL by achieving a record no other bowler has managed in the tournament’s 18-year run.
He became the first bowler in IPL history to take a wicket on the opening ball of an innings five times.
He now stands alone at the top, with seven other bowlers having managed the feat three times each.
Despite Shami's brilliant spell, Delhi Capitals chased down the 142-run target in just 17.1 overs and handed a 6-wicket defeat to LSG.
