Trinamool Congress MP questions trophy visit to temple by Suryakumar Yadav, Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah

Kirti Azad has raised questions after India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir and Jay Shah were seen taking the World Cup trophy to a Hindu temple in Ahmedabad following India’s victory on Sunday.
The Trinamool Congress MP expressed his criticism in a post on X, questioning why the trophy was taken to a religious place and raising concerns over what he described as mixing religion with a national sporting achievement.
In his post, Azad wrote, “SHAME ON TEAM INDIA! When we won the World Cup under Kapil Dev in 1983, we had Hindu, Muslim, Sikh and Christian in the team. We brought the trophy to our motherland India, Bharat, Hindustan.
Why the hell is the Indian cricket trophy being dragged to a temple? Why not a mosque? Why not a church? Why not a gurudwara?
This team represents India not Suryakumar Yadav’s or Jay Shah’s family.”
Azad also mentioned players like Mohammed Siraj and Sanju Samson, saying the trophy belongs to 1.4 billion Indians of every faith and should not be associated with any one religion.
The post has triggered debate on social media, with users expressing mixed reactions over the gesture and Azad’s remarks.
