Kenya’s rising long-distance runner Sabastian Sawe has etched his name in history by setting a new world record in the marathon, clocking an astonishing 1:59:30 at the London Marathon, as per reports.
The 29-year-old bettered the previous benchmark set by Eliud Kipchoge, whose 1:59:40 run in 2019 was widely regarded as an unofficial milestone. Sawe’s timing now stands as the fastest ever recorded in an official marathon event.
Sawe has now won all four of his marathon appearances, underlining his dominance over the 26.2-mile distance. He had earlier announced himself on the global stage with a victory in London on debut last year.
In September, Sawe claimed a commanding victory in the 51st edition of the Berlin Marathon in a time of 2:02:16, while his compatriot Rosemary Wanjiru won the women's race in 2:21:05.
Sawe delivered one of the fastest performances of the year then but had narrowly missed both course and world records. Japan's Akira Akasaki produced a surprise by taking second place in 2:06:15.
