Italy national football team stunned as playoff collapse against Bosnia ends FIFA World Cup hopes

Four-time champions Italy national football team have failed to qualify for a third consecutive FIFA World Cup after a dramatic playoff defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in Zenica.
The collapse in the qualification campaign has reportedly left the footballing world stunned, with distraught players and inconsolable fans reflecting a heartbreak that goes far beyond the pitch.
What followed was scenes of devastation, as players dropped to the ground in disbelief and fans watched their World Cup dream slip away yet again.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time before Bosnia triumphed 4-1 in the shootout, securing their first World Cup appearance since 2014.
Italy took an early lead through Moise Kean in the 15th minute, capitalising on a costly error by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. However, the game turned just before halftime when defender Alessandro Bastoni was sent off, leaving Italy to battle with 10 men.
Bosnia equalised in the 79th minute through Haris Tabakovic, forcing the game into extra time and eventually penalties. Italy struggled in the shootout, with only Sandro Tonali converting, while Bosnia held their nerve to seal victory.
“This is upsetting for everyone,” said defender Leonardo Spinazzola, as head coach Gennaro Gattuso apologised for the team’s failure.
The defeat extends Italy’s World Cup drought, having also missed out on the 2018 and 2022 editions. Their last appearance came in 2014, where they exited in the group stage.
Elsewhere in European playoffs, the Czech Republic advanced past Denmark via penalties, Sweden edged Poland 3-2, and Türkiye secured a narrow 1-0 win over Kosovo to qualify.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, featuring an expanded 48-team format.
