Is tonight MS Dhoni’s final match at Chepauk ?

Fans of MS Dhoni are once again getting emotional ahead of tonight’s IPL 2026 clash between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk. Since the clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday is CSK’s last home match of the season, many believe it could possibly be Dhoni’s final appearance at the stadium in IPL colours.
Dhoni has missed all the matches IPL 2026 till now due to a reported calf injury. However, many fans believe tonight’s match could still become special because of a statement Dhoni made during CSK’s IPL title celebrations in 2021.
“I have always planned my cricket. The last game I played was in Ranchi. The last home ODI I played was also in my hometown, Ranchi. So hopefully, my last T20 match will be in Chennai. Whether it happens next year or after five years, we don’t know,” Dhoni had said at the time, hinting at his future plans.
Interestingly, that “five-year” timeline now ends with tonight’s game at Chepauk, adding more emotion and curiosity around Dhoni’s future. Since no more IPL matches are scheduled in Chennai this season, fans feel this might be their last chance to see ‘Thala’ in CSK colours at home.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin also recently hinted that Dhoni could return against SRH. According to Ashwin, Dhoni has been fit enough to play for the last few matches, but the team management may have been focusing on preparing younger players for the future.
Despite all the speculation, neither Chennai Super Kings nor MS Dhoni has officially confirmed any retirement plans yet. In fact, some reports even suggest that Dhoni could continue playing beyond IPL 2026.
So for now, everything remains only speculation. But one thing is certain — if Dhoni walks onto the field at Chepauk tonight, the atmosphere is expected to be truly unforgettable for cricket fans.
