With the IPL 2025 on hold for a week, as announced by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, the spotlight now shifts to the playoff race, as only 16 matches remain in the tournament.

These consist of 12 remaining group stage matches, three play-offs (one eliminator and two qualifiers), and the final.

The suspension came after a missile attack on Jammu airport by the Pakistani Army on Thursday, which was successfully neutralised by Indian defence systems. In the aftermath, the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamshala – the 58th of the season – was abruptly suspended due to a stadium blackout implemented for security reasons.

Gujarat Titans (GT) are currently at the top of the points table with 16 points. A single win from their remaining matches will all but seal their spot in the playoffs, making them the front-runners.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), also on 16 points, need to win at least two of their remaining matches to secure playoff qualification. With a slightly lower net run rate than Gujarat, if they win the two matches they can be a contender  to win their maiden IPL title.

Punjab Kings (PBKS) are in third place with 15 points and remain very much in the playoff race. A win in their next game would push them to 17 points – likely enough to qualify, depending on other results.

Mumbai Indians (MI), sitting in fourth place with 14 points, still have a strong shot at the top four. However, with teams close behind and the margin for error shrinking, they will need to be careful in the final leg.

The BCCI is expected to release an updated schedule once the security situation stabilises.
