India Women registered a resounding victory at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai to kick off the three T20 series against West Indies on a positive note on Sunday.

Earlier in the day, West Indies Women won the toss and elected to field first. Smriti Mandhana came out all guns blazing, taking on the challenge head on.

Mandhana and Uma Chetry registered a 50-run opening stand to India in just 6.3 overs, laying the foundation for a big score early.

Once Chetry got out on the personal score of 24, it was all Mandhana and Jemiamh Rodrigues hitting Windies bowlers all around the park.

Mandhana reached her 28th half-century and Rodriguez her 12h in the process, with the latter going on to score a 35-ball 73 at the strike rate of 208.57.

The blistering attack by the duo led India to a challenging 195 in the 20 overs, with the loss of only four wickets.

In reply, frequent wickets marred the West Indies chase, the powerplay saw the score of a mere 36-2. After that, it was just catching up for the tourists, and they never looked up to the task, despite a half-century by Deandra Dottin and Qiana Joseph’s 49.

In the end, WI managed only 146-7 in their allotted 20 overs, falling short of India’s score by 49 runs.

Brief scores:

India Women 195-4 (Jemimah Rodriguez 73 and Smriti Mandhana 45; Chinelle 2-0-17-3 and Afy Fletcher 3-0-39-3) beat West Indies Women (Deandra Dottin 52 and Qiana Joseph 49; Titas Sadhu 4-0-37-3 and Deepti Sharma 4-0-21-2) by 49 runs.
