Following in the footsteps of their men’s cricket team, India’s women’s cricket team is also likely to follow the no-handshake policy with Pakistan’s cricket team, a move that has been at the centre of controversies in the recently concluded Men’s Asia Cup 2025.
Having won their first match in the Women’s World Cup against co-hosts Sri Lanka, the Women in Blue will now take on arch-rivals Pakistan in Colombo on October 5.
According to reports, the team will not shake hands with Pakistan players before or after the match, just like their male counterparts.
On the tournament front, all-round contributions by Deepti Sharma, who emerged as the first Indian bowler to score a fifty and take a three-fer in a World Cup match.
India recovered from a tough situation to register a comprehensive 59-run victory (DLS method) against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the World Cup on Tuesday, helping the hosts make a spectacular winning start.
India scored 269/8 in 47 overs with the help of Amanjot Kaur’s 57 and Deepti Sharma’s 53, with Inoka Ranaweera of Sri Lanka taking 4 wickets for 46 and Udeshika Prabhodhani with figures of 2-55. In reply, Sri Lanka managed only 211-10 in 45.4 overs, with the highest contributions by Chamari Athapaththu (43) and Nilakshika Silva (35) as Deepti Sharma took 3 wickets for 54 and Sneh Rana claimed 2 scalps for 32 runs.
