Toss
Rohit Sharma spun the coin, and it was an unsuccessful call from NZ skipper Kane Williamson, resulting in India winning a crucial toss, and electing to bat first.
Both the teams are unchanged from their last match in the group stage.
In the penultimate game for the quest for World Cup glory, India and New Zealand will clash in the first semi-final of the tournament today at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
While both teams are familiar with the pressure of the occasion, they may worry about getting over it. For years now, India and New Zealand have featured in numerous semi-finals and finals, but are yet to get over the line.
For India, their last ICC event win came in the 2013 Champions trophy, having won the 2011 World Cup at home. However, their run in the 2019 World Cup was cut short by New Zealand, playing on a reserve day for the semi-final.
New Zealand, however, need to get over the tough and unfortunate final they played against England in 2019, having come so close to winning and then losing it to a technicality.
For India, the home conditions and their unbeatable run in this World Cup would surely provide a much-needed boost to overcome their knockout kryptonite, New Zealand.
For New Zealand, it is more about holding their nerves in crucial moments and treating this as just another match, not thinking about their performance or fate over the years in such crucial matches.
New Zealand’s key performers
Banglore-origin Rachin Ravindra, a find of the tournament, and Daryl Mitchell would be the key batters for New Zealand. Kane Williamson, on the other hand, would like to live up to his reputation as the man of the big matches, in what could be his last World Cup.
If the ball is moving at the beginning of the second innings like it has in Wankhede, Tim Southee and Trent Boult can bring the Old Trafford memories back, when they had India 5 for 3 in the 2019 semi-final.
The in-form India
Similarly, the Indian pace trio of Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah becomes unplayable every time the conditions offer them something.
With Shubman Gill underperforming to his potential, Rohit Sharma’s explosive starts have been crucial for India, and his team will need the same from him on the big stage.
Virat Kohli’s performances in the knockout games have been abysmal compared to the standards set himself, and he will be looking to get away with it this time. Currently, he is the leading run-scorer of the tournament.
India’s middle order looks rock solid with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, however, they would like to come into the innings a little late when the ball is old.
On slow-turning tracks, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja of India have looked better than any spinners in the World Cup, and in such conditions, India will surely have an upper hand.
