Harmanpreet Kaur may lose captaincy after India’s early T20 World Cup exit: Report

Updated: Oct 16th, 2024

Following the disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may look to replace India’s skipper Harmanpreet Kaur as a captain, according to reports.

Kaur, appointed as captain in 2016, may reportedly be replace by the current vice-captain Smriti Mandhana.

Notably, India failed to secure semifinal spot in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Dubai and Sharjah after facing losses against New Zealand and Australia in the group stage.

Before the Indian team’s departure to the UAE for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, Kaur claimed that the 15-member side was the best group ever playing the showpiece event in the shortest format.

But all of it came crashing down when India lost to 58 runs by New Zealand in their tournament opener at Dubai and from there, they had to play catch up.

On defeat against Australia, Kaur expressed frustration over missing opportunities to capitalise on loose deliveries during her 63-run stand with Deepti Sharma for the fourth wicket as her side suffered 7-run loss against Australia in a crucial Women’s T20 World Cup clash.

India’s narrow loss on Sunday night left Harmanpreet’s side needing a helping hand from Pakistan if they were to progress to the semifinal from Group A.

With Pakistan’s loss against New Zealand on Monday, doors for semifinals were shut for India.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Kaur said, “When me and Deepti were batting, we couldn’t hit a few loose balls. We can learn a lot from Australia. Whatever was in our hands, we were trying to do that but that's something not in our control.”
