Harbhajan Singh Backs Gambhir Amid Criticism, Says Shubman Gill Needs Time To Grow

Gautam Gambhir’s outspoken personality may not appeal to everyone, but former India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes the criticism directed at the head coach is often unfair.

Harbhajan said Gambhir has always been fiercely committed to winning and has placed the team’s interests above personal milestones. He questioned why the coach becomes the first target whenever India fails to get the desired result.

‘Bitter’ words, but a winning mindset

Harbhajan described Gambhir as someone who speaks his mind without hesitation. He admitted that the coach’s comments can sometimes come across as bitter, but said there is truth behind what he says.

According to Harbhajan, Gambhir’s public image should not be mistaken for his approach to the team. The former spinner said Gambhir has never been comfortable with accepting defeat without putting up a fight and wants his players to show the same hunger to win.

Harbhajan also pointed to India’s performances in major tournaments under Gambhir as part of the reason for his continued support.

Gill deserves time, says Harbhajan

Harbhajan also threw his weight behind Shubman Gill, who has taken over as India’s Test and ODI captain.

Gill’s ODI captaincy has not delivered the results expected so far, but Harbhajan believes judging a young captain too quickly would be unfair. He said leadership develops with experience and Gill needs time to find his feet in the role.

The former spinner cited India’s 2-2 Test series draw in England last year as an example of Gill’s potential. Gill was the series’ highest run-scorer while leading the side.

Harbhajan acknowledged that Gill’s captaincy journey will have its ups and downs, but believes his understanding of the game and personality give him the qualities needed to become a successful leader.
