Gerard Piqué fined €200,000 in Spain insider trading case

Former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué has been fined €2,00,000 by Spain’s market regulator over insider trading linked to a 2021 corporate takeover deal.
As per reports, the penalty was announced by the CNMV, Spain’s market regulator, which described the offence as “very serious”. Piqué reportedly purchased more than 1,04,000 shares in workplace health and safety company Aspy Global Services on January 20, 2021, after learning that Atrys Health was considering acquiring the firm.
The takeover discussions reportedly became public two days later, and Atrys officially launched a €223 million bid for Aspy on January 26, 2021.
Aspy’s stock surged nearly 20% between Piqué’s purchase and the time he sold his shares on January 27.
The regulator did not reveal how much profit Piqué made from the transaction. Under Spanish rules, penalties for insider trading can reach up to four times the illicit gains, as per reports.
Businessman Francisco José Elías Navarro was also fined €1,00,000 for allegedly passing confidential information about the deal to Piqué.
Piqué, who retired from FC Barcelona in 2022 after a trophy-filled career that included winning the FIFA World Cup with Spain national football team.
