Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger dies after train rams car near Salzburg

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Manninger died after a train hit his car at a level crossing near Salzburg in Austria early Thursday, police said. He was 48.
As per reports, the accident occurred around 8.20 am when a train collided with a vehicle that had been stuck on the tracks. The impact dragged the car along the line, leaving it severely damaged, authorities said. Emergency responders reached the spot promptly and pulled Manninger from the wreckage.
Rescue teams reportedly attempted to revive him using defibrillation and assisted breathing, but he could not be saved. The train driver was not injured, police added. Manninger’s identity was confirmed several hours after the incident.
Manninger accomplished a long professional career across Europe, representing clubs including Juventus, Udinese and FC Augsburg, in addition to Arsenal. He began his career with Red Bull Salzburg and went on to play for 14 clubs.
During his time at Arsenal between 1997 and 2002, he made 64 appearances and was part of the squad that won the Premier League and the FA Cup. He stepped in as first-choice goalkeeper during the 1997-98 season following an injury to David Seaman, earning praise for his performances, including notable displays against West Ham United and Manchester United. He was named the Premier League Player of the Month for March 1998.
At the international level, Manninger made 33 appearances for the Austria national football team and was part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2008, co-hosted by Austria. Known for his composure, he remained a dependable presence for the national side.
