CWG 2026: Sanjana Crashes Out Of Women’s 77kg Weightlifting After Three Failed Snatch Attempts

India’s hopes of another weightlifting medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 suffered a setback on Wednesday as 19-year-old Sanjana bowed out of the women’s 77kg event after failing to register a successful lift in the snatch.

Making her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, Sanjana failed to clear her opening weight of 94kg in all three attempts, bringing her campaign to an early end before the clean and jerk.

Three failed attempts end Sanjana’s campaign

Under weightlifting rules, an athlete must record at least one successful snatch to remain in the competition. Sanjana’s three unsuccessful attempts at 94kg meant she could not progress to the clean and jerk.

The result was a major disappointment for the teenager, who had entered the competition among the medal contenders.

Based on declared entry weights, Sanjana had the second-highest combined total in the field — 94kg in the snatch and 122kg in the clean and jerk — behind Samoa’s Seine Stowers.

She became only the second Indian weightlifter at the Glasgow Games to finish without a medal after Nirupama Devi, who recorded a Did Not Finish in the women’s 63kg event following three failed clean and jerk attempts.

Sanjana had impressed at Asian Championships

Sanjana had entered the Commonwealth Games after a strong performance at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Gandhinagar earlier this year.

She lifted a career-best total of 220kg — 96kg in the snatch and 124kg in the clean and jerk — to claim bronze medals in the snatch, clean and jerk and overall standings.

India’s weightlifters have otherwise enjoyed a strong campaign in Glasgow, winning seven medals so far, including Mirabai Chanu’s gold in the women’s 48kg category.
