Australian TV broadcasters step back from Pakistan’s T20I series over ‘low interest’

Ahead of the bilateral series between Australia and Pakistan, Australian TV broadcasters refused to telecast the series due to low interest and the timing of the telecast, according to reports.
The three match T20I series is going to start from January 29 between Australia and Pakistan at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, just days before the T20 World Cup. However, Pakistan cricket was dealt with a big blow from Australian TV broadcasters after they refused to telecast the series matches in Australia.
With only a week left for the T20 World Cup, all attention is shifted towards the tournament, which led to less priority for bilateral series. A senior television executive reportedly described the Pakistan tour as ‘commercially unviable’, despite the long-standing rivalry between the two teams, cited the reports.
As per the reports, the matches will start late at night in Australia and are unlikely to deliver the strong viewership or advertising returns.
The timing of the series is also the reason because several senior Australian players like Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, and Tim David will sit out of the series as part of the workload management ahead of the T20 World Cup. Absence of senior players reduces the audience interest, making the series less attractive for broadcasters.
