Asian Para Games 2023: Medals flowing in as India stands sixth in overall tally

The Indian contingent of 303 athletes, 143 coaches, and support staff are participating across 17 sporting disciplines in the Asian Para Games, taking place from Oct 22 to 28 in China’s Hangzhou.
The athletes’ list comprises 191 male and 112 female athletes, with the largest contingent of 123 athletes being cleared for the Athletics events, as per a Sports Ministry release.

Today’s Highlights
India has won a total of 58 medals till now at the games, including 15 gold, 20 silver, and 23 bronze medals, sitting sixth in the overall medal tally.
India bagged gold in a javelin event today, with Sundar Singh Gurjar rising to the occasion with a world-record throw of 68.60m in the men’s F46 javelin throw.
Earlier, Sumit Antil, the reigning Paralympic and world champion, had also clinched a gold medal while improving his own world record with a 73.29m throw in the men’s javelin F64 event at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, today.

Another Indian in action, Pushpendra Singh, bagged a bronze with a throw of 62.06m.
Haney won another gold for India in the men’s javelin throw F37/38 category, breaking the Asian Para Games record with a throw of 55.97m.
India also secured golds in the men’s and women’s 1,500m T11 events, with wins for Ankur Dhama and Rakshitha Raju.
Nimisha Suresh won India a gold in the T47 category of women’s Long Jump.

Prachi Yadav became the first Indian to win a gold in para-canoe, even while Neeraj Yadav, Yogesh Kathuniya - a Paralympic Games silver medalist, and Muthuraja swept the three podium places in the Men’s Discus Throw F54/55/56 Final on Oct 24, as India won 16 medals, including three golds on the second day of medal competitions.
