Ahmedabad unveils design for 350-acre Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave masterplan

Located beside the Sabarmati River and anchored by the 132,000-seat Narendra Modi Stadium, the project aims to combine international-standard sports infrastructure with public open spaces and year-round community use. The enclave is planned as a large urban park integrating major sporting venues with plazas, gardens and pedestrian-friendly streets.
The development comes as Ahmedabad prepares to host the Commonwealth Games Federation’s centenary event in 2030. Gujarat is also set to host the 2029 World Police & Fire Games. Officials say the events are expected to boost infrastructure development and generate employment in hospitality and retail.

Key venues planned
The masterplan includes three major competition venues along with a training institute:
International Tennis Centre: Proposed as one of the largest in India, the facility will include a 10,000-seat centre court, 5,000- and 3,000-seat show courts, and eight match courts. The venue is designed with a lightweight roof structure to allow shade and natural ventilation. Post-Games, it is planned to operate as a tennis club with additional amenities.
National Institute of Sports Excellence: Positioned between the tennis centre and Narendra Modi Stadium, the institute will provide training halls, gymnasiums, recovery and sports science facilities for athletes and coaches.
Indoor Arena: An 18,000-seat arena designed to host gymnastics and basketball events, along with concerts and indoor sports such as kabaddi. Architectural elements reference traditional Gujarati jali screens for shading and climate control.
Aquatic Centre: Planned with a seating capacity of 12,000 during major tournaments, scalable to 4,000 afterward. The facility will cater to swimming, diving and artistic swimming events and is expected to function as a public leisure and training pool after international competitions.

Public spaces and legacy use
The Sabarmati riverfront edge within the enclave is proposed as a central Games Plaza for ceremonies and large gatherings, later transitioning into a public space with dining areas, sports courts and landscaped gardens. The broader park is envisioned as a “green lung” for the city, remaining accessible to residents beyond major events.
Project leaders said the design focuses on climate responsiveness, integration with nature and long-term usability to avoid underutilised, single-purpose venues.
The SVP Sports Enclave is positioned as a major addition to Ahmedabad’s sports infrastructure, aligning with upcoming international events and the city’s long-term urban development plans.
