India has officially stepped forward to declare its bid to host the Olympic Games for the first time, proposing Ahmedabad as the host city for the 2036 Olympics. Discussions around India’s bid have been ongoing, with the construction of the proposed Olympic stadium in Ahmedabad now nearing completion.

An Indian delegation met officials of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, to formally present India’s proposal to host the Games on Tuesday.

The timing of this bid is significant, as the IOC recently announced a pause in the selection process for future Olympic host countries. Despite this, the Indian delegation proceeded with its meeting to emphasise India’s commitment to hosting the Games.

The delegation included PT Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association, along with representatives from the Union Sports Ministry and the Gujarat government. For the first time in its history, India has officially proposed the city Ahmedabad to the IOC as a potential host for the Olympic Games. While the 2032 Olympics are set to take place in Brisbane, India has now set its sights firmly on 2036.

PT Usha stated, “Hosting the Olympic Games in India will not just be a grand event but will also be a historic first-time event that will have an impact on every Indian.”

She also shared a photo on social media of the delegation’s meeting with IOC officials in Lausanne, describing the discussions as ‘meaningful’.
