An experience of a lifetime turned sour for many spectators who suffered medical complications during the India vs Pakistan match on Oct 14.
10 hospitalised as health deteriorates
According to the data available from 108 emergency ambulance services in Ahmedabad, more than 600 spectators complained of health complications at the Narendra Modi stadium during the India - Pakistan World Cup game.
These people were provided with in-stadium preliminary medical attention, while 10 were admitted to nearby hospitals as their health deteriorated further.
The entry into the stadium had started as early as 10 a.m. while spectators had started gathering from almost 7.30 a.m. Once inside, access to water was limited.
The health complications are seen to be caused by sitting in a huge crowd under the scorching heat and, in some cases, even without consuming anything.
There were 150 cases of health complications till 3 p.m., which doubled up to 300 till 5 p.m. This number rose to nearly 600 in the final 2.5 hours of the game.
Health complications like high blood pressure, headaches, etc went up during the game.
Most of the patients complained of dehydration, fainting, vertigo, and a severe headache.
Authorities on foot, learning from the previous meeting
The authorities had set up six Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ambulances at the stadium, along with setting up two temporary mini hospitals at the stadium with six and two beds, respectively.
It is noteworthy that during the first game of the World Cup at the stadium in Motera of England vs New Zealand, 81 people complained of health complications.
23 out of them had fainted, 25 suffered from body aches or headaches, 7 suffered from blood pressure issues, 10 suffered from weakness, 2 had tripped over, and 14 faced other complications.
