Snapchat to charge fees for users exceeding 5GB in ‘Memories’ feature

Snapchat will begin charging users who store over five gigabytes (GB) of content in its ‘Memories’ feature. The new rule will impact those who have accumulated extensive photo and video collections since the feature was launched in 2016.
“For Snapchatters with more than 5GB of Memories, meaning thousands of Snaps, we are rolling out new options to upgrade and increase storage. The introductory Memories Storage Plans offer 100GB, 250GB with Snapchat+, or 5TB with Snapchat Platinum,” said Snapchat in a release.
“We’ll provide 12 months of temporary Memories storage for any Memories that exceed the 5GB storage limit. Snapchatters can upgrade to a Memories Storage Plan at any time, and as always, will be able to download their Memories directly to their devices,” they added.
The company stated that most users would remain unaffected since the majority of users store under 5GB of content. However, the move sparked criticism online, with some pointing out that they had accumulated years’ worth of photos and videos, which could now translate into significant recurring costs.
Snapchat sees strong momentum in India’s creator ecosystem
With North India creators being so critical to India’s thriving creator ecosystem, Delhi was the latest stop reflecting strong adoption in the North and Snapchat’s growing footprint across India, Snapchat said.
“India has been at the centre of our global creator strategy, not just as one of our fastest-growing markets, but also as one of the biggest contributors to global content creation on Snapchat. These milestones are the result of deliberate, sustained efforts to build an inclusive and thriving creator ecosystem,” said Saket Jha Saurabh, Director and Head-Content and AR Partnerships, Snap Inc.
“That’s why we’ve invested in initiatives like ‘Snapchat Creator Connect’, reaching creators beyond metros and into the heart of India, ensuring that diverse talent has access to opportunities and tools to grow,” Saurabh added.
Snapchat hosted ‘Creator Connect’ here, bringing together leading creators, Snap stars, and industry stakeholders. The event featured Snap School, an education and mentorship programme designed to help creators refine storytelling skills and maximise growth on the platform. Monetisation opportunities were also discussed.
