A recent development in Russian medical research has sparked international attention. Scientists at the National Medical Research Radiological Center (NMRRC), under the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, have announced promising results in two cutting-edge approaches to cancer treatment: an oncolytic vaccine named EnteroMix.

According to the NMRRC, EnteroMix is an oncolytic vaccine developed in collaboration with the Engelhardt Institute of Molecular Biology. The vaccine combines four non-pathogenic viruses capable of selectively destroying malignant cells while simultaneously stimulating the patient’s antitumour immunity.

The EnteroMix, uses safe viruses to directly attack cancer cells. These viruses not only destroy the tumour but also help the body’s natural defences fight cancer more strongly. In animal studies, the vaccine slowed cancer growth and in some cases even destroyed tumours completely.

The second approach is personalised mRNA vaccines, being developed with the Gamaleya Institute. Here, doctors study the genetic makeup of each patient’s tumour and then create a custom-made vaccine for that person. This vaccine trains the immune system to recognise and kill cancer cells based on that tumour’s unique ‘fingerprint’.

The difference between the two is simple, EnteroMix uses viruses to attack tumors directly, while mRNA vaccines work like a training programme, teaching the body to spot and fight the cancer itself.
