Researchers in London grow human teeth in lab
London, in a landmark innovation, were successful in growing a real human tooth in a lab using human cells, promising a boost to the future of dentistry.
Right now, when people lose or damage a tooth, dentists use fillings or implants. But fillings don’t last forever and can make teeth weaker. Implants need surgery and don’t work exactly like real teeth.
But now, scientists have found a way to grow a tooth naturally using the person’s own cells!
The researchers, with Imperial College London made a special material that helps cells communicate.. These cells send signals to grow and change. The new material slowly sends these signals just like it happens in nature so the cells start growing into a real tooth.
Dr Xuechen Zhang from King’s College said that earlier tries didn’t work because all the signals were sent at once. Now, with this new method, the tooth grows like it would in the body.
The next step? Scientists now want to take the lab-grown tooth and put it into a person’s mouth so that in the future, people might grow their own teeth back instead of getting fake ones.
This could mean no more fillings or implants, just real, natural teeth!
