Japanese electronics giant Casio has introduced ‘Moflin’, a compact AI-powered robot companion designed to simulate emotional responsiveness and grow into a bond with its owner.

According to the company website, Moflin is engineered to express a wide emotional range including joy, curiosity, relaxation and even loneliness through movements, sounds, and gestures.

However, its emotional states are based on algorithms rather than true consciousness.

Through daily interactions—stroking, talking, or hugging Moflin will adapt and become more expressive over time. Casio describes this as “growing attachment”, with each unit developing a unique personality shaped by how it is treated.

Because Moflin is a robot, it has been pitched as an alternative for people who want companionship without the unpredictability or allergies associated with pet animals.

The pricing of the robot is kept at $429 (~₹38,000).

The robot includes a microphone, touch sensors, accelerometer/gyroscope, and an illuminance sensor to monitor ambient light. On a full charge, it offers about 5 hours of typical use and recharging takes around 3.5 hours.

The robot will connect to an app called MofLife, which tracks Moflin’s emotional states, logs interactions, and lets users customise settings like sound, name, and firmware updates.

Casio has said that voice inputs are processed locally, and the robot does not ‘understand’ speech in human terms. Data uploads (for journal records, maintenance, or restoration) occur only with user consent.
