NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), one of the most powerful observatories ever built, has captured stunning images of a mysterious cloud of gas and dust deep within the Milky Way galaxy, offering new insights into star formation near our galaxy’s core, according to reports.

Webb Sets Its Eyes on Sagittarius B

The James Webb Space Telescope recently focused on Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2), a massive molecular cloud located near the center of the Milky Way. This region lies just a few hundred light-years away from the galaxy’s supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*, as per reports.

Spanning nearly 150 light-years, Sagittarius B2 contains an enormous amount of material—estimated at 3 to 10 million times the mass of our Sun in gas and dust. Despite occupying only about 10 percent of the gas-rich area in the galactic center, the region is responsible for forming nearly half of the stars there, making it one of the most active and puzzling star-forming zones in our galaxy.According to a NASA release in 2025, this unusually high star-forming efficiency has long intrigued astronomers 

Webb Captures Images 

Using its Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), the James Webb Telescope captured breathtaking images showing glowing pink, purple, and red clumps—signatures of active star nurseries—embedded within dark, dust-covered regions.

These detailed observations are reportedly helping scientists understand why Sagittarius B2 is so efficient at forming stars and how extreme environments near a supermassive black hole influence stellar birth.
