Instagram is set to introduce a new feature called ‘Your Algorithm,’ which will give users control over the content displayed on their main feed by allowing them to personalise recommendations based on their preferences.

Announcing the update, Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said that the feature will initially allow users to view and edit topics of interest across the app's main sections, helping them personalise their experience more effectively.

Current features focus on topic-based customisation, but future updates are expected to introduce more advanced controls. Users will eventually be able to prioritise specific people, moods or vibes, as well as preferred content formats such as photos or videos, enabling a more tailored feed experience.

While Instagram already offers limited recommendation controls for reels and the explore page, the new feature expands those capabilities across the broader platform. Mosseri described the update as a significant step towards giving users more influence over how content is recommended to them.

Traditionally, social media algorithms have relied on analysing user behaviour including likes, views, shares and interactions to determine what content appears in their feeds. However, Mosseri acknowledged that users often feel frustrated because they have little direct control over these recommendations. The new feature aims to bridge that gap by allowing users to actively communicate their preferences to the platform.

Mosseri also noted that advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) are helping Instagram better understand and categorise content in ways that are easier for users to comprehend.
