Instagram has reportedly rolled out a new feature called ‘Instants’, designed to help users share spontaneous, real-time moments with friends. The feature works similarly to Snapchat, allowing photos to be viewed only once before disappearing.

The feature is part of Instagram’s push towards more casual and authentic interactions. With Instants, users can quickly share everyday moments without worrying about filters, editing, or maintaining a polished online image.

Photos must be clicked in real time, as users cannot upload images from their camera roll or edit them afterward. The company also said Instants can only be viewed once, remain available for up to 24 hours, and cannot be screenshotted or screen-recorded.

To use the feature, users need to open the Instagram inbox, capture a photo instantly, and share it with Close Friends or Mutual Followers.

While captions can be added, no additional edits are allowed. Recipients can react or reply to the photo, but the image disappears once viewed. Instagram has also included an “Undo” option immediately after sharing, allowing users to retract the Instant if needed.

Based on user feedback, Instagram is also testing a standalone Instants app in select countries. The app provides direct camera access and lets users log in using their existing Instagram accounts. Photos shared through the standalone app will also appear on Instagram. The Instants app is currently available on both iOS and Android in selected regions.

Instagram stated that all existing privacy and safety protections will remain active for Instants. Users can choose exactly who can view their shared photos, including Close Friends or Mutual Followers.

Teen users will automatically remain connected to Instagram Teen Account Protections and Parental Supervision Settings without requiring any extra setup.
