Elon Musk’s Grok AI will stop editing photos of real people to depict them in revealing or undressed clothing, following widespread backlash after such AI-generated images went viral online. The controversy erupted after edited images of women, created using the AI, circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism over privacy and consent concerns.Elon Musk’s platform X announced measures to prevent this happening, following global backlash over its generation of sexualised images of children and women.

The statement read “We now geoblock the ability of all users to generate images of real people in bikinis, underwear, and similar attire via the Grok account and in Grok in X in those jurisdictions where it’s illegal.”

X said that these restrictions extend to every user, paid subscribers included. Moreover, image generation and editing features through the Grok account on X are now exclusive to paid subscribers. And, this measure provides added security by enabling accountability for those misusing the Grok account to break laws or X policies.

X said that it continues its dedication to building a safe space for every user, upholding absolute zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation, non-consensual nudity, or unwanted sexual content.

Adding to that, X said that it will act decisively to eliminate high-priority violations like Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) and non-consensual nudity, penalizing accounts that breach X Rules. Additionally, X notifies law enforcement about accounts targeting child sexual exploitation materials when appropriate.

X says that this does not alter its standing safety protocols, which require all AI prompts and generated content posted on X to strictly follow X Rules regardless of how the content is produced or whether users are free or paid subscribers.

X's Safety team also is working nonstop to introduce further safeguards, swiftly remove violative or illegal content, permanently suspend accounts as needed, and coordinate with local governments and law enforcement when necessary.

Generative AI's swift advancement also poses challenges throughout the industry. X, that collaborates closely with users, partners, regulators, and fellow platforms to tackle emerging issues more effectively and promptly.

Indonesia became the first country to block access to grok entirely, which was followed by its neighbouring country Malaysia, too.
