Unfolding smoothly in orbit nearly 450 km above Earth, the payload dubbed Cosmos Bloom opened its petals upon exposure to direct sunlight. The mission marks the first time lab-grown diamonds created entirely in India’s 'Diamond City' have reached outer space, proving both the brilliance and structural resilience of synthetic gems under extreme orbital conditions.

From Carbon Seeds in Surat to the Cosmos

Every phase of Cosmos Bloom’s creation from growing the diamond crystals to cutting, precision polishing, and final aerospace-grade jewellery fabrication took place inside Surat’s industrial units.

The rough diamonds were synthesized by Sanginimaitri Labs (SML) using advanced high-pressure techniques before artisans at Nityas Gems and Jewellery Ltd cut, polished, and mounted them into the gold lotus frame.

Speaking on the achievement, Rajnikant Chanchad, Director of Nityas Gems and Jewellery Ltd, revealed that the design underwent rigorous technical refinements to withstand the violent g-forces and thermal shocks of a rocket launch.

"It is a matter of immense pride that our team was chosen for this project," Chanchad said. "Working alongside the Cosmos Diamonds team, we modified the structural design to meet strict aerospace flight specifications."

The Symbolism Behind the Cosmic Lotus

Conceptualised by Sanjana Tripuramallu, founder of Cosmos Diamonds, the lotus motif was chosen to link Indian cultural heritage with cutting-edge space technology.

"In Indian cosmology, the lotus symbolises creation, the first form to emerge from the primordial universe," Tripuramallu explained. "A lab-grown diamond follows a similar journey, beginning as carbon and, under intense pressure and heat, transforming through human ingenuity into something extraordinary."

Industry leaders in Surat view the flight as a major validation for Indian lab-grown diamonds, which are rapidly gaining global market share alongside traditional mined stones.

Velji Sheta, partner at Sanginimaitri Labs, noted that demonstrating LGDs can endure the harsh vacuum and solar radiation of space sends a powerful message to international markets regarding the quality and durability of Indian-made lab diamonds.
