Apple’s foldable iPhone 18 tipped for September 2026 debut: reports

Apple is likely to enter the foldable smartphone segment with a redesigned iPhone, with reports suggesting the device could mark one of the most significant design changes since the original iPhone launched in 2007.
As per Bloomberg reports, the foldable iPhone is likely to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup at Apple’s annual autumn event, typically held in September 2026. The device is expected to go on sale shortly after the launch, although initial supplies may be limited.
Speculation around the so-called ‘iPhone Fold’ has intensified in recent weeks, with conflicting reports on its production timeline. A report by Nikkei Asia claimed the company was facing manufacturing challenges that could delay shipments by several months, potentially pushing its commercial rollout into 2027.
However, a subsequent report by Bloomberg contradicted these claims, stating that the device remains on track for launch as per Apple’s usual schedule.
Industry sources indicate that Apple has already begun trial production of the device, reportedly at facilities operated by Foxconn, a long-time manufacturing partner.
Leaked specifications suggest the foldable handset may feature a 5.5-inch outer display and a larger 7.8-inch internal screen when unfolded, offering a tablet-like experience. Both displays are expected to use high-refresh-rate AMOLED panels.
To maintain a slim profile, Apple is reportedly considering replacing its Face ID system with a side-mounted Touch ID sensor. The device may also include punch-hole front cameras on both screens and a “liquid metal” hinge to enhance durability.
The foldable iPhone is expected to be powered by a next-generation chipset, likely to succeed the A19 Pro, and could feature a dual rear camera setup with high-resolution sensors, along with front-facing cameras for each display.
Pricing details remain unconfirmed, but reports suggest the device could be positioned at the premium end of the market, with an estimated price of around $2,400 (approximately ₹2.2 lakh). This would place it above competing devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
If launched as expected, the foldable iPhone would mark Apple’s first entry into the segment, intensifying competition in the high-end smartphone market.
