AI is making it hard to know what is real: Instagram head warns users

Instagram head Adam Mosseri in his New Year post has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) is making it very difficult to tell the difference between real and fake content on social media. After OpenAI’s ChatGPTCEO Sam Altman raised similar concerns, Mosseri said AI videos have become so realistic that people no longer know what to believe.
According to him, we are used to trusting what we see with our eyes. But now, that habit can be risky. He advised users to question everything they see online, because not all videos and images are real anymore.
Mosseri said social media platforms need to change with the rise of AI. He believes Instagram should have tools that can identify real content, detect AI-made videos, and clearly tag them. This will help users understand whether a video is made by a human or by AI.
He also suggested that users who post too much AI content may lose credibility. On the other hand, those who share more real and original content could be more credible trusted more.
Mosseri admitted that some AI videos are very impressive and creative. But the main issue is that people should know when content is made using AI. Meta has not yet announced when such tools will be launched on Instagram.
He also criticised camera and tech companies, saying they have been trying to make everyone look perfect for years. With AI, creating edited and unreal content has become even easier.
Interestingly, many users are now sharing blurry and unedited photos and videos. This new trend shows that people want more real and natural content instead of polished and fake-looking posts.
However, Mosseri warned that AI is becoming smarter by every passing day. In the future, it may become even harder to identify fake content. That’s why users need to stay alert and think twice before believing what they see online.
