Uttarakhand student dies under mysterious circumstances in Russia

A student from Uttarakhand who had gone to Russia on a study visa has died under mysterious circumstances. The mortal remains of the deceased youth have now been brought back to his native place.
The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Kumar (30), a resident of the Shaktifarmpur area in Udham Singh Nagar district.
Rakesh had gone to Russia in August this year to pursue higher studies. According to his brother Deepu Maurya, after reaching Russia, Rakesh spoke to the family over the phone and said that he was living in extremely difficult conditions there.
The family has alleged that Rakesh was forcibly recruited into the Russian army. They last spoke to him on August 30, during which he reportedly expressed fear that he was being trained and would be sent to fight in the war against Ukraine.
Rakesh had also sent photographs of him in Russian army uniform to his family. Earlier, the family had written letters to the Government of India and the Ministry of External Affairs, seeking help to bring him back safely.
There is growing speculation that Rakesh might have died during the Ukraine war. However, the administration and police officials have so far refrained from making any official statement on the matter.
When the body arrived at his home, the family refused to speak to the media or local representatives.
Rakesh’s family is originally from Badayun district in Uttar Pradesh and has been living in Uttarakhand for the past 15 years. His father works in a private company in SIDCUL.
