The United States has reiterated that tourist visa applications will be denied if consular officers believe the primary purpose of travel is to give birth in the US to secure American citizenship for the child, a practice commonly known as birth tourism.

The US Embassy in India issued the latest notification on social media platform X, stating that this practice is not permitted, and applicants intending to do so will be refused visas.

The embassy noted that while some individuals have previously travelled to the US specifically to give birth, visa rules have been tightened significantly since the tenure of President Donald Trump.

Under the current guidelines, intentionally travelling for childbirth is considered misuse of a tourist visa, and consular officers are required to deny applications if they suspect such intent.

The embassy said the objective of the policy is to ensure the integrity of US immigration law and prevent the exploitation of birthright citizenship provisions.
